Aligned with this year’s Black History Month theme across Canada, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries”, the UM Faculty of Science aimed to highlight the reason why some of the Black students in the Faculty have chosen science as their field of study.

My favourite thing about science is that it teaches you how to think, not just what to know. I love how it rewards curiosity, critical thinking, and persistence. In microbiology, especially, it’s powerful to see how tiny systems can have massive impacts on human health. Science feels like a tool for solving real problems and creating meaningful change.

My favourite thing about Science has to be the collaborative effort that goes into each lab! I mostly enjoy mixing different chemicals in the lab!

My favourite thing about science is how everything comes together and is interconnected. You might go into a chemistry class not thinking about biology at al,l but some topics connect back to biology for a clearer understanding of how a certain molecule or compound works. Science always has you looking at the bigger picture, thinking about how one thing leads to the next and the next.

I enjoy learning science because it helps me understand how our bodies, our environment, and the world around us work together. It feels like a never-ending ocean of knowledge—the more I learn, the more connections I see and the more there is to discover. Science lets me explain what I observe, even what I cannot see, and shows how vast, fascinating, and deeply interconnected our world truly is.

With so many diverse career paths, both in industry and academia, the Faculty of Science enrols more undergraduate students than any other UM Faculty. It is crucial that we create an inclusive and welcoming environment for future visionaries who are starting their careers in science.
