The University of Manitoba Robotics Team (UMRT) may be one of the newer design teams in the Price Faculty of Engineering but it has quickly made its mark. Founded in 2023, UMRT is already competing in rover challenges, leading youth outreach initiatives and growing into a multidisciplinary hub for students passionate about robotics. We connected with co-founders Syed Abraham Ahmed and Minjeong Kang, along with team members, to learn more about UMRT’s journey.
How did the team get started and what inspired its creation?
Founders Syed Abraham Ahmed and Minjeong Kang saw a gap in robotics opportunities at the University of Manitoba despite strong student interest. Abraham was encouraged by his sister to take the first step, while Minjeong’s experience at the Manitoba Robot Games, where she saw how engaged high school students were, pushed her to bring that excitement to the university level.
After months of online planning sessions and conversations with other student groups, UMRT officially launched in September 2023 with Abraham and Minjeong as co-presidents and a small founding team of students eager to build something from scratch.
What have been some of the biggest challenges and successes in building up the team?
Starting a technical team came with a lot of unknowns from design decisions to securing funding. Early prototypes were often over-engineered but with guidance from experienced advisors, UMRT was able to quickly pivot their focus on building a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) instead. Securing sponsorship was another hurdle but persistence, faculty support and advice from other university teams helped the team gain traction. Today, UMRT’s progress reflects the dedication of its members and the support of sponsors and mentors.
What would you say to someone who’s interested in UMRT but isn’t sure if they’re qualified or the right fit?
Just show up! UMRT runs open sessions early in the school year, covering basics like ROS2 (Robot Operating System) and CAD (3D Modelling Software) design, so newcomers can learn without pressure. The team values curiosity and consistency over prior experience, skills can be taught but enthusiasm and commitment are what make someone stand out.
How has working on UMRT helped you grow beyond what courses teach?
Courses provide theory but UMRT lets students apply that knowledge to real-world systems. Members gain experience with how mechanical, electrical and software components work together in harmony. They also learn industry tools like ROS2 and Docker. It’s hands-on problem-solving that builds confidence and develops lasting skills.
What technical and professional skills have members gained?
On the technical side, UMRT’s work spans three main areas:
On the professional side, members gain soft skills such as teamwork, public speaking and networking, skills which are just as valuable as technical ones.
Why is youth outreach such a big part of UMRT’s mission?
Many UMRT members got their start in robotics through school programs, which makes giving back especially meaningful. The team created outreach kits and interactive STEM activities designed for younger students. These efforts not only inspire the next generation of innovators but also help strengthen Manitoba’s growing robotics community while building awareness of UMRT’s mission and impact.
How do you balance outreach, competition prep and academic responsibilities?
Communication and prioritization are key. Academics always come first but because competitions typically happen in summer, the team can focus on the rover outside of class time. Outreach activities are also scheduled collaboratively so no one is stretched too thin.
What are UMRT’s short and long-term goals?
In the short-term, the team is focused on growing its resources, improving the rover’s performance and training new members. Long-term, UMRT wants to expand into new competitions like BattleBots, Micromouse or VEX Robotics and establish itself as a legacy organization known for both technical excellence and community impact.
How can students, faculty or industry partners get involved?
Students of all levels can join open sessions or apply for roles—no experience is required, just a willingness to learn. Faculty can provide mentorship and resources, while industry partners can support through sponsorship, technical guidance or materials. What started off as just an idea between a few passionate students has grown into a thriving design team making waves in both competition and community outreach. In just a few years, UMRT has gone from initial planning sessions to building rovers, mentoring future engineers and establishing itself as a key part of Manitoba’s robotics scene. As the team continues to evolve, its mission remains clear: build cutting-edge robotics, inspire young minds and strengthen the province’s engineering and robotics community for years to come.
