UM launches Strategic Research Plan 2024-29: A New Era of Discovery and Impact

On October 8, UM faculty, staff, students and external stakeholders gathered at a well-attended event at the Innovation Hub to celebrate an historic milestone – the official launch of our ambitious five-year strategy for maximum research impact.

The newly introduced Strategic Research Plan, titled “Change Through Research”, is a comprehensive roadmap designed to propel UM into a leading position in global and national impact.

The plan highlights seven key themes:

Foundations
Social Justice and Human Rights
Research by, for, and with Indigenous Peoples
Water and Food Security
Health and Well-Being
Climate Action and Sustainability
Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Arctic and the World

The launch event was a vibrant celebration of collaborative effort, showcasing the culmination of months of community consultations and contributions from many researchers, staff and students. Special guests in attendance included the Hon. Renée Cable, Minister of Advanced Education and Training and Elder Dr. Levinia Brown.

“With a growing Indigenous population of 18 percent in Manitoba, we have a unique opportunity to pursue a strategy of social and economic reconciliation at scale and with maximum impact,” said Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice President (Research and International).”With this plan as our guide, we are not just setting ambitious goals; we are embarking on a journey of discovery that will resonate across the globe and provide solutions for society.”

The event had seven trade-style booths showcasing world-leading UM researchers from each of the thematic areas of focus.

The new plan promises to integrate and expand upon UM’s existing strengths while embracing interdisciplinary approaches and innovative research methods. As the university gears up to meet these ambitious goals, the excitement among faculty, students, and community members reflects a shared dedication to advancing knowledge and addressing critical global challenges.
