Earning another spot among the worlds best

Research at UM continues to gain recognition, with two subject areas placing among the world’s top 100 and six ranking in the top 10 in Canada in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS),

The GRAS rankings analyze more than 2,000 universities worldwide, listing only the top performers in each field. In total, 21 UM subject areas are ranked.

"This is an exciting achievement for UM and a reflection of the strong research taking place across our campuses," said Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International).

Progress towards strategic goals and across disciplines

Key results for UM include:

•  UM Food Science & Technology in the global 51-75 range (4^th in Canada)

•  Telecommunication Engineering in the 76–100 range (6-7^th in Canada)

•  Oceanography in the 101-150 range (4-8^th in Canada) 

• Public Health in the 101-150 range (10-11^th in Canada)

• Dentistry & Oral Sciences in the 101-150 range (4-7^th in Canada)

• Clinical Medicine in the 151-200 range (10-11^th in Canada).

The rankings reflect progress towards a key goal in the University’s Strategic Research Plan 2024–2029 of achieving global top-100 recognition in 10 subject areas.

“Having multiple subject areas recognized among the world’s best demonstrates the quality of research at UM, and the increasing impact our faculty are having nationally and internationally to address pressing challenges,” said Pinto.

They highlight research connected to UM’s strategic research priorities, including food and water security, health and well-being, climate action and sustainability, and research focused on Arctic sovereignty and security, accessibility and community co-development. 

ShanghaiRanking assesses universities across 57 academic subjects using measures including research output, impact, quality and international collaboration.
