As the University of Manitoba celebrates its 2026 Fall Convocation ceremonies October 20-22, 2026, two extraordinary Canadians will receive Honorary Degrees, the university’s highest honour that can be bestowed on an individual.

This fall’s recipients, entrepreneur and philanthropist Anthony von Mandl and Métis artist and knowledge keeper Jennine Krauchi, have each made a profound impact in their fields through innovation, leadership and a deep commitment to their communities. From transforming Canada’s wine and beverage industry to preserving and revitalizing Métis artistic traditions, their remarkable accomplishments have left a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.

Anthony von Mandl, OC, OBC
B.Sc.(Econ.) (UBC)
Honorary Doctor of Laws

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Anthony von Mandl has played a transformative role in shaping Canada’s wine and beverage industries. After beginning his career selling imported European wines from the trunk of his car, he went on to establish the Mark Anthony Group. He revitalized a struggling Okanagan winery into the internationally renowned Mission Hill Family Estate and helped establish the region as a globally respected wine destination. His innovative business vision also led to the creation of successful beverage brands, including Mike’s Hard Lemonade and White Claw Hard Seltzer. Beyond business, von Mandl has demonstrated a strong commitment to philanthropy, supporting health research, higher education, environmental sustainability and community initiatives. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Member of the Order of British Columbia.

Without innovation and new, daring thinking, there is no progress.

Jennine Krauchi

Internationally recognized Métis artist, educator and knowledge keeper Jennine Krauchi has dedicated her career to preserving, revitalizing and sharing Métis beadwork and cultural traditions. Through her intricate artwork, teaching and mentorship, she has inspired new generations to reconnect with and celebrate Métis culture and heritage. Krauchi has collaborated with museums, galleries, universities and cultural institutions across Canada and abroad, with her work featured in major exhibitions and held in prominent public collections. A respected advocate for Indigenous cultural knowledge, she has also contributed to discussions concerning the preservation, repatriation and respectful care of Indigenous artifacts. Her many honours include the Manitoba Arts Award of Distinction, the Indspire Award for Culture, Heritage and Spirituality and the Métis National Council’s Order of the Sash, as well as the King Charles III’s Coronation medal and the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee medal.

There’s something about doing beadwork that just brings you back to who you are, and to being proud of who you are.
