A slam dunk for the herd: Celebrating a game-changing gift for Bisons basketball

Generous $1M gift by alum and former player, John Loewen

May 25, 2026

Today, UM's Bisons Men's Basketball Program was the recipient of the largest gift in Bison Sports history, with $1M donation from John Loewen, former leader on Bisons Men's basketball team, Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame inductee, former MLA and business leader.

“My time at the University of Manitoba shaped who I am today. This gift is really a way of saying thank you and of helping ensure future student-athletes have the same meaningful experiences, connections and opportunities that meant so much to me,” says John Loewen.

These are just some of the ways this gift will support the program over the next 10-12 years:

  • Team equipment, apparel, gear, software, and other technologies supporting player development
Facility upgrades (including team locker room and weight room)
  • Non-conference, exhibition, and international travel
  • Establishment of work-study programs for student-athletes within Bison Men’s Basketball
  • Recruitment activities
  • Meals and nutrition to support training and game recovery
  • Hosting of major events, including but not limited to U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Championships

"We are beyond grateful for this incredible gift from John. This will allow us to offer the best student athlete experience in Canada. Our goals have always been to compete at the highest levels, build the next group of leaders in our community and make being a Bison be the best experience possible for these athletes," says Bison Men’s Basketball head coach Kirby Schepp. "John’s "Game Changing” gift puts in a tremendous position to do all of these,” he added.

The Director, Athletics and Recreation, Gene Muller, will work with the Head Coach, Bison Men’s Basketball to approve expenses and oversee the spending from this trust fund.

“John’s gift opens many new doors for our program, and I’m excited to see what emerges from this opportunity,” says UM President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch. “This gift also reminds students of the power of philanthropy, and I’m excited by the idea that one day they will be inspired to pay it forward to others.”
