What is a bursary?

A bursary is a non-repayable monetary award given to a student based primarily on financial need. It helps pay for school costs like tuition, books or living.

At UM, bursaries are designed to support you on your student journey, helping to make your education more affordable. For students with demonstrated financial need, bursaries bridge the gap between the cost of school and the resources available to pay for it.

How funding works: Discover your options

Applying for a bursary: Most UM bursaries can be accessed through one application in your student Aurora: the UM General Bursary application. 
Deadlines: Applications open in early August; the deadline to apply is October 1.

Amounts and eligibility: Award amounts typically range from $100 to $1,000, and eligibility criteria can vary from one bursary to another. If eligible, students may receive multiple bursaries from different award funds.

Different bursaries: Some bursaries may require extra forms or attachments, so it is important to read the details carefully before submitting your application.

Myth #1: I need have straight As

While students must meet minimum academic standing requirements, bursaries are primarily based on financial need.

In other words, you don’t have to be a straight-A student to apply.

Myth #2: Applying is complicated and I probably won’t qualify

Applying isn’t complicated — and it’s worth your time. You can apply to most bursaries through the UM General Bursary application in Aurora.
