Welcome to the Fall Term! Whether you are new to UM, continuing your studies or beginning a professional or graduate program, I hope your first days are energizing and fulfilling.
The start of a new academic year can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate it alone. Below you will find information about resources, supports, events and activities with your academic success and health and well-being in mind.
Orientation and student resources
- Bison Bash: Join UMSU for music, food, clubs, market vendors and opportunities to connect with other Bisons.
- New undergraduate students: The First Year Centre can help you build confidence and succeed. Follow @umfirstyearcentre for events, contests, reminders and tips. Access UM Commons for info on academics, campus life, student supports and ways to get involved.
- Graduate students: If you missed Orientation, presentations and resources are available on the graduate student orientation webpage.
- Indigenous students: Connect with staff, Elders, programs and resources at the Indigenous Student Centre in Migizii Agamik – Bald Eagle Lodge.
- Indigenous Orientation takes place Wednesday, September 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event includes cultural activities, campus resources, tours, entertainment, and a free lunch. Everyone is welcome!
- International students: The International Centre, located at 541 UMSU University Centre, offers information, programs and support. Visit the Tony K. Lau Global Lounge to relax, connect and participate in events and workshops. Browse upcoming activities on the International Centre events listing and follow @um.international.
- UM Libraries: Access study spaces, research assistance, workshops, computers, printing and subject-specific support at the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.
- Libraries Day: Stop by on Thursday, September 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for coffee, snacks, activities, prizes and information about library supports.
Health, safety and well-being
- Get active: Your Sport and Recreation fee includes access to recreation facilities and group fitness classes at the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses, as well as free admission to Bisons regular-season home games. Visit Recreation Services to take a study break and get moving.
- Access counselling: The Student Counselling Centre offers timely, focused support through its One-at-a-Time Counselling approach. Appointments can be scheduled up to 24 hours in advance for in-person, online or via phone through the online portal.
- Take a break: Visit the Student Wellness Centre at 162 Extended Education to rest, recharge, connect with a Peer Health Educator, and explore wellness resources.
- Sexual violence support: The Sexual Violence Resource Centre provides confidential, trauma-informed information and support to people who have experienced sexual violence and those supporting survivors. Visit 537 UMSU University Centre, call 204-474-6562 or email svrc@umanitoba.ca.
- Stay safe: Everyone has the right to feel safe and respected on campus. Review UM’s safety resources, download the UM Safe app, and familiarize yourself with expectations for respectful conduct.
