While you may be tempted to go all in on academic study, taking care of your personal wellness can help you be more successful by staying alert, focused and motivated. Here are some top tips to have fabulous finals, curated by Student Support Services.

Ask for what you need.

If you require additional support to accommodate a disability, Student Accessibility Services can make arrangements, and their plans are tailored to each student’s needs. Their Exam Centre, which must be booked in advance, is equipped with assistive technologies, ergonomic seating, incandescent lighting and other assistive devices.

Try technology.

AI can be a useful tool to stay organized and prepare for tests. Some of the apps recommended by Student Accessibility Services that are helpful for all abilities are: JamWorks, Quizlet, and OneNote, which can include AI-assisted notetaking capabilities, customized accessibility profiles (e.g. for ADHD or vision impaired users), and the secured capacity to summarize lectures and create action plans from them.

Change up your view.

A new environment can bring a fresh perspective to your studying. Check out these hidden gems, or drop-in to the Student Wellness Centre—their open lounge has sit/stand desks and a mindful campus space with noise-cancelling headphones that is also stimming friendly and safe for breastfeeding/chestfeeding.

Get in it together.

Whether you’re looking for a study buddy, or to surround yourself with community, there are a variety of places and events for group work. The Academic Learning Centre has workshops on things like creating a study schedule or preparing for finals. They also offer group study sessions for select courses, led by a student who’s taken the same class before.

Make new connections.

Gather with human (or animal) friends at events hosted by the Student Wellness Centre, for activities like crafting, speed friending, body doubling, and pet therapy.

Talk to someone who understands.

You don’t have to stress on your own. Chat with trained peer mentors who have been in your shoes and know what it’s like to be a student at Healthy U (for support with mental, physical, and sexual health or substance abuse) and Charge Ahead (academic support). Sign up for professional counselling (virtual, in-person) at the Counselling Centre. There is also spiritual guidance available through the Spiritual Care and Multi-Faith Centre. If you choose to use AI tools, research them as you would any academic source: know who developed it and how they’ll use your personal data.
