Consumer culture continues to thrive, but from a sustainability standpoint, it’s not the direction our planet needs. For more than a century, many business models have prioritized profit above all else, often at the expense of environmental and social wellbeing. Today, this approach is losing its luster. With growing awareness of climate impacts and rising calls for social responsibility, consumers increasingly expect companies to conduct business with purpose.

In response, many organizations are shifting toward positive impact models that intentionally balance economic success with social and environmental value. These purpose driven practices are helping shape more resilient, equitable and sustainable communities.

Sustainability Night 2026 highlights this evolution in business models. Cohosted by the Office of Sustainability and the Asper School of Business, the event features a panel of  community business leaders who are advancing meaningful and positive social impact through their work. The evening will feature:

  • Compost Winnipeg, a local social enterprise focused on furthering waste reduction and climate action mandates while raising funds for educational programs across Manitoba
  • Fireweed Food Coop, a non-profit multi-stakeholder cooperative with a mission to reduce barriers and increase participation in regional food systems for producers and consumers alike.
  • Assiniboine Credit Union, a values‑based financial cooperative providing responsible banking services grounded in social and environmental principles.
  • Narratives Inc., a purpose-driven firm offering holistic consulting in planning, impact assessment, capacity building, and design.

Together, these organizations demonstrate how purposeful business strategies can create lasting community benefits.

Purpose over profit challenges the long-held mindset

The University of Manitoba is also embracing this shift. The forthcoming Chiu Centre for Business Serving Community, housed in the I.H. Asper School of Business, aims to empower students to lead with purpose.

Bruno Dyck, inaugural Director of the Centre and Norman Frohlich Professor in Business Sustainability, emphasizes that the Chiu Centre challenges the long‑held profit‑only mindset. By bringing together experts from across disciplines, it encourages businesses to “make the move” toward advancing social and environmental wellbeing alongside financial success.

Boilerplate: sustainability

We pursue sustainability in its many forms—societal, cultural, economic, environmental. Building a sustainable future is among the commitments you’ll find in MomentUM: Leading change together, the University of Manitoba’s 2024–2029 strategic plan.
