For generations, a diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) came with a daunting prognosis: irreversible, permanent, and progressive decline in kidney function. Treatments were largely designed to delay the inevitable outcome of kidney failure, often requiring dialysis.

However, research work by Dr. Michael Reaume, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba, is challenging this long-held clinical standard. His research—titled "Rethinking Chronic Kidney Disease: Is Remission Possible?"—earned him first place at the 2026 Three Minute Postdoc (3MP) competition.

Redefining Treatment Goals

CKD impacts approximately 1 in 8 Canadians, significantly raising the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, and premature death. Over the last decade, new pharmacologic treatments have dramatically improved the cardiovascular and kidney health of patients living with CKD. This observation led Dr. Reaume, under the guidance of Dr. Navdeep Tangri from the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology, to investigate whether patients living with CKD can achieve remission, rather than progression, of their kidney disease.

Analyzing health administrative data from nearly 70,000 adults living with CKD, Dr. Reaume’s study established a practical definition of remission. By monitoring key indicators already measured in routine kidney care—such as stable kidney function and reductions in protein leakage in urine (a marker of kidney damage)—the research revealed encouraging findings: remission is both common and closely linked to decreased risks of kidney failure, heart disease, and early death.

People living with chronic kidney disease deserve a goal beyond simply slowing its progression. Remission gives patients and clinicians something more hopeful and measurable to aim for.

The 3MP competition tests scholars' abilities to condense years of specialized investigation into a compelling, three-minute presentation accessible to a non-expert audience.

The Three Minute Postdoc (3MP) competition was a wonderful experience," Dr. Reaume reflected on his win. "It challenged me to explain why my research matters in a way that was clear and meaningful to people outside my field."

By providing clinicians and patients with a concrete, achievable target, Dr. Reaume's research stands to transform patient conversations and redefine long-term management strategies across kidney care.
