The UM Committee on Artificial Intelligence has developed a new resource page to support students on the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
As a research-intensive university, UM encourages the responsible exploration of AI while considering its risks.
AI is not a single technology, but a way of using computers and machines to simulate human learning, understanding, problem-solving, creativity and more. It has the potential to dramatically shift how we learn, teach and work.
“We’re seeing questions about AI pop up in a wide variety of topics, from academic integrity to use in the classroom, copyright, and what tools can be used as accessibility supports to help students study and learn,” says Mark Torchia, Vice-Provost (Learning, Analytics and Academic Infrastructure) and chair of the committee. “Pulling all the information in one place will make it easier for members of the UM community to find the information on AI that they’re looking for.”
Along with the resource links, the page also has UM’s AI Guiding Principles, which were released by the committee in the fall. The principles establish a shared foundation for responsible AI use at UM, and address ethical considerations, data protection, academic integrity, accessibility and sustainability.
“AI has incredible potential, but also potential pitfalls and it’s important for us to approach the technology responsibly,” says Torchia.
To help support students in navigating AI, UM has also introduced the UM-Student AI course, available through UM Learn. The four-hour course, created by the Digital Education Council, provides key knowledge and practical skills to navigate the impact of AI in both their studies and career. The course covers key concepts such as best practices for prompting, evaluating AI output, critical thinking, respecting academic integrity and emerging workforce skills.
The development of these resources is the latest step in the committee’s work to help UM navigate the complexities of AI, safeguard its core values and integrity, while also exploring the positive opportunities the technology provides for teaching, learning and research.
UM’s approach to responsible digital innovation aligns with commitments in MomentUM: Leading change together, UM’s 2024–2029 strategic plan. Through the Digital Governance Council, we strengthen the digital systems that support ethical innovation and knowledge sharing across communities.
