E-bike rentals coming to Fort Garry
Local start-up Canrover to offer e-bikes for rent beginning September.
Local start-up Canrover to offer e-bikes for rent beginning September.
A new service is coming to Fort Garry campus, and it’s on two wheels.
Up to fifteen new pedal assist e-bikes will be available for rent from six hubs on campus.
The e-bikes are available for rent on a per-minute basis, with passes and promotional offers also available through the company’s app. The bikes are part of a pilot program being offered by a local company, Canrover, who will rent and maintain the bikes until the snow flies this fall, and again in spring, summer and fall 2027.
The smart fleet of e-bikes is GPS-enabled and can be a fast and fun way to travel around campus and to nearby destinations.
To rent a Canrover e-bike, follow these steps:
During opening week from September 8 - 11, visit the Canrover information booth in person next to UMSU University Centre.
You can ride a pedal-assist e-bike on all streets and designated bike paths and multi-use paths, both on- and off-campus.
Be sure to follow the rules of the road and reduce your speed in pedestrian zones and busy areas. Always wear a helmet and avoid riding on sidewalks unless permitted by local regulations.
Canrover’s e-bikes reach a maximum speed of 25 km/hour, with automatic speed reduction to 10 km/hour in high-traffic pedestrian zones such as Currie Place.
Find additional cycling safety tips from UM Security Services. You can also refer to this UMCycle Brochure for additional information on cycling safety.
The e-bikes for rent are just like a typical bicycle, with pedals and brakes.
As you begin to pedal, the electric battery provides extra power, which is especially helpful if you are cycling into the wind or up a hill. The additional electric power becomes unavailable when you reach the top set speed of the e-bike.
You do not need a driver’s license or special license to operate a pedal-assist e-bike.
You can find e-bikes for rent at six designated bike racks on campus, including:
Designated racks will be marked by a Canrover flag, and individual parking spaces at the rack will be identified by a “Reserved for Canrover” sticker.
For the most up-to-date locations of available bikes and designated parking/pickup hubs, please check the Canrover app map.
