Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026: Protecting Research, Data and People

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year the University of Manitoba’s Research Security and Information Services and Technology (IST) teams are partnering to focus on an important question: how can we better protect the research, data and people that make our research possible?

Research increasingly depends on digital tools, connected devices, large datasets, cloud services and international collaboration. These connections create tremendous opportunities, but they also introduce cybersecurity considerations that researchers need to understand

Throughout October, Research Security and IST will share practical information designed primarily for faculty researchers, while also supporting graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and staff involved in research. Our campaign will include a series of UM Today articles covering topics such as data storage and protection, the Loaner Laptop Program, cybersecurity and defence, and data retention. We will also highlight resources from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, the University of Manitoba and other trusted sources. 

We will also be taking the conversation beyond the screen. Research Security and IST will host information tables at several high-traffic locations across campus, providing opportunities to ask questions and learn more about resources available to the research community.

  • Wednesday, October 14 - Fletcher Argue (first floor)
  • Thursday, October 22 - Brodie Atrium
  • Monday, October 26 - Armes (second floor - outside Science Students Association lounge)

The campaign will culminate in a virtual panel, “Beyond the Lab: Protecting Research, Data & People – Cybersecurity for UM Researchers,” featuring perspectives from across the University and beyond. The panel will explore the intersection of cybersecurity, research security and physical security, and offer practical advice for researchers.

Cybersecurity is not simply an IT issue. Protecting research is a shared responsibility, and small steps can make a meaningful difference.
