As the City of Winnipeg continues road and bridge work on Pembina Highway over Abinojii Mikanah, they are focusing construction on the northbound lanes from Chancellor Drive to Plaza Drive, which temporarily affects ramp access to Abinojii Mikanah.

The biggest change is that the eastbound ramp from Pembina Highway to Abinojii Mikanah will be closed for pavement work starting Monday, June 22, 2026, and will remain closed for approximately 6 weeks.

Detours to go East

Vehicular detours from UM are not short and include, but not limited to :

  • From Chancellor Matheson Road to Bison Drive, then continuing north on Waverley Street and merging eastbound onto Abinojii Mikanah.

    Or
  • Pembina Highway south to the  Perimeter Highway eastbound. Take St. Mary's Road or St. Anne’s Road north into the St. Vital communities.

Bus travellers should watch the Winnipeg Transit service alerts page for route changes, which should be posted on June 22, 2026.

Construction updates spring 2026

  • The city will also maintain one southbound left-turn lane onto University Crescent.
  • Construction on the Westbound Abinojii Mikanah ramp to Northbound/Southbound Pembina Highway will allow for two (2) lanes of traffic to remain open at all times.

Traveller who walks to campus or takes a bike, please note:

  • The sidewalk on the East side of Pembina will be closed during construction.
  • The West sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians.
  • Cyclists are asked to walk their bikes across the bridge.

Learn more about the project on the website at: winnipeg.ca/pembinaoverabinojii.

Regularly check the service disruption and notice page to learn of construction that affects roads, parking lots, sidewalks, building access and room access.
