Beloved professor left indelible mark on Faculty of Law community.
Professor Karen Busby (September 17, 1958 - July 23, 2026) was an award-winning educator, scholar and dedicated advocate for equity and human rights who taught at Robson Hall for over 30 years. The Faculty of Law extends deepest condolences to her family, friends, students, and colleagues who were inspired and influenced by her legacy. Her presence had a profound impact on the community at Robson Hall, the Manitoba legal community and beyond.
She joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba in 1988, and was the founding director of the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Human Rights Research in 2010. Among her many awards were the Barney Sneiderman Award for Teaching Excellence (2018) the Dr. And Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching (2015), and the Canadian Bar Association “Hero” Award (2006). Earlier this summer, the Faculty of Law was honored to designate her an Eminent Jurist of Robson Hall, in recognition of and appreciation for her extraordinary contributions to legal education, public scholarship, and human rights advocacy.
From her earliest days as a law student to her decade of leadership as the inaugural Director of the Centre for Human Rights Research, she devoted her life to the pursuit of justice, substantive equality, human dignity, and the rule of law. She taught generations of students not merely what the law is, but what it ought to be. Whether explaining the complexities of constitutional principles, advancing the cause of substantive equality, advocating for survivors of sexual violence, or guiding students through the intricacies of the King's Bench Rules, she brought the same intellectual rigour, generosity, and sense of purpose to every endeavour.
Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of legal scholars and practitioners to uphold the highest standards of integrity, compassion, and social justice.
