Alum and former associate professor to succeed retiring ACJ for seven-year term
According to a Manitoba Order in Council, Judge David Ireland [LLB/10; LLM/14] was appointed an Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court for a non-renewable term of seven years, effective July 1, 2026. With this appointment, he succeeds former Associate Chief Judge Tracey M. Lord who retires on the same date. Ireland will join The Honourable Lee Ann M. Martin and The Honourable Geoffrey H. Bayly as the three Associate Chief Judges of the Provincial Court of Manitoba.
Ireland graduated from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law with an LLB in 2010 and an LLM in 2014. In 2016, he returned to his alma mater as an Assistant Professor, teaching criminal law and procedure, evidence and advocacy, and a special course on preventing wrongful convictions. He also established a clinic for students to gain hands-on experience working pro bono with post-conviction individuals addressing wrongful conviction issues. While teaching, he continued to practice criminal defence law at Gindin Wolson Simmonds Roitenberg. He became an Associate Professor prior to his appointment to the bench in 2023.
Ireland’s scholarly activities included co-leading SSHRC-funded research on improving the judicial system and he co-authored and co-edited several books on criminal law and procedure.
