The UM Faculty of Law congratulates Tréchelle Bunn [JD/26], Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, Manitoba recipient of the 2026 Royal Society of Canada’s Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize.

Chief Bunn graduated from the UM Faculty of Law in 2026. She made history at 25, becoming the first woman and youngest person elected Chief of Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation. A dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights, she has spoken on national and international stages, including at the United Nations, and plans to use her law degree in lifelong service to her people.

The Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize is presented annually to a graduating law student in each of the law schools in Canada who is most likely to positively influence equity and social justice in Canada or globally upon graduation.
