The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers Graduate Education Mentoring Workshops for Faculty and Staff.
In the fall of 2021, the Faculty of Graduate Studies launched an innovative series of Graduate Education Mentoring (GEM) workshops aimed at fostering academic excellence and supporting faculty and staff who are working with UM graduate students. These workshops are designed to provide guidance and resources to the university community and recognize the pivotal role mentors play in shaping and elevating the graduate education experience.
Workshop topics have included What’s New in the current term, FAQ on PhD Committees and Thesis Distributions, Supporting International Students, Contract Cheating, Communication and Conflict Resolution, and Graduate Student Supports.
The upcoming Winter 2024 workshop offerings include:
All GEM workshops are open to faculty and staff invested in supporting graduate students. Any staff or faculty member interested in attending GEM workshops are invited to register here. Electronic workshop certificates are sent out to individuals upon completion of 4 workshops, and every 4 thereafter.
Dr. Kelley Main, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate studies who initiated the GEM workshop program says “The positive feedback from past participants underscores the impact theses workshops have on both mentors and mentees. Empowering our faculty and staff with the tools to support graduate students is pivotal in shaping the future of graduate students at UM.”
