From 2,000+ patents to the NHL: Reinhold Schmieding to share entrepreneurial journey with Winnipeg students

Arthrex Co-founder, and global innovator of surgical tools that have helped premier athletes, including a Winnipeg Jets player, will speak to Manitoba students about his success, May 20th

Interactive and state-of-the art displays will be the backdrop of The Associates of the Asper School of Business IDEATE event on May 20, 2026. Students from high schools across the city and UM will gain insights into the journey of Reinhold Schmieding, inventor, entrepreneur, and President and Co-Founder of Arthrex, a global medical technology company. Schmieding is the 2026 IDEA recipient and will be celebrated at the IDEA dinner the next evening.

Why his story is of interest:

  • Created some of the first surgical tools used for knee and shoulder surgery
  • Holds over 2,000+ patents or 2,000+ inventions
  • Arthrex launches about 1,000 new medical products every year, with annual revenue of $5 billion

    Fun fact: Connor Hellebuyck — Winnipeg Jets goaltender and Olympic gold medallist — recently underwent knee surgery and was treated using Arthrex technology.
